Harry Potter Fic Recs

I've never been very organized with my HP fic bookmarking or reccing. I'll make an attempt here. I read a lot of Remus/Sirius fic, but you'll also see gen works and some Fleur/Tonks.

Quick Links for All-Time Faves: All the Young Dudes, Leave the Children Behind, and Dragging Down a Monolith.

On the Longer Side

  • All the Young Dudes by gamesformay (222k, Marauder's Era, R/S, WIP). Absolute fave. This is unfinished and may forever be, but it's also the basis of SO much of my MWPP headcanoning. Sirius wears lipstick. Remus' mum gives him pot. James' middle names are Warren and Bhargava and he signs his letters in all caps. Need I say more? (*Note: this is not the same ATYD as "MsKingBean"'s ATYD. I've never read that one, but I can totally and unbiased-ly say this one is better *wink*)
  • The Shoebox Project by LadyJaida and Rave (~231k?, Marauder's Era, R/S, Complete). Any Remus/Sirius fan worth his salt has heard of SBP. Partially illustrated/epistolary format, partially traditional narrative. A teenage epic.
  • Leave the Children Behind by montparnasse (54k, Lie Low at Lupin's and more, Complete). This prose is OFF THE WALLS. Each word is electrifying and the whole thing's about love and love and love. Maybe my favorite fic of any fandom ever, definitely my favorite writing style of any fandom ever.
  • The Dogfather by hollimichelle (71k, Canon Rewrite, R/S, Complete). What if Petunia Dursley gave up Harry for adoption? Everything diverges from there. An incredibly kind story, one that will leave you laughing and crying and hugging your laptop to your chest.
  • Against the Moonby StoplightDelight (852k, MWPP, Gen, WIP). Yes this is an INSANE wordcount for an unfinished work but it's fundamental to me as it was one of the very first fics I ever read in the fandom. Written by an author with chronic illness/pain and that's a big theme of the story.

The Shorter Sort
  • Left and Leaving by gyzym (1.8k, Sirius & Regulus). If you haven't heard of gyzym, just trust me; anything he writes is fantastic. I always love reading about the Black family dynamics (see: Dragging Down a Monolith, below), and this delivers!
  • He Will Have Power the Dark Lord Knows Not by dirgewithoutmusic (11k, Canon Rewrite, Gen). What if Harry were born a Squib? Rewrite of books 1-7, and so thoughtfully done. Part of a series, which I haven't read in full.
  • Eclipse and Transit by montparnasse (43.3k, R/S, post-Break Up). See "Leave the Children Behind" up above? Whatever that is, this fic is the polar opposite of it. Two broken people struggling around each other's rough edges. Not (?) a happy ending.
  • Annual Honesty by tigrrmilk (18k, 1st War, R/S). Tbh, I haven't read this in a while, but my notes were "Writing style - !!!!" and "FUCK ME," so, that bodes well :)
  • Obscure Topography by montparnasse (4.8k, Fleur/Tonks). Montparnasse just writes stunner after stunner. Imagine how delighted I was to learn she wrote for my favorite HP femslash pairing!
  • Dragging Down a Monolith by montparnasse (13.5k, R/S, Andromeda/Ted, and Fleur/Tonks). If this page becomes a Montparnasse shrine, it will be all the better for it. This is a portrait of how the House of Black ends. It's excellent and absolutely gut-wrenchingly DEVASTATING.
  • Wanderings with Werewolves by Penknife (6.7k, Remus/Gilderoy Lockhart!). This absolutely hilarious classic has a mere 49 kudos on AO3! How dare?! This is a bit of campy, rarepair backstory that I have inserted neatly into my own personal headcanon database. Inspired!
  • Animalia by gyzym (6.8k, R/S, J/L, S/J). A little insight into the dynamics of those crazy kids, the Hogwarts Marauders.
  • What is it like to be a bat? by WanderingBandurria (1.6k, Pre-slash R/S). A sweet character-studyish ficlet that deals with Remus' chronic pain (a subject close to my heart).
  • That the Science of Cartography is Limited by Rave (7.3k, R/S). Absolutely devastating, told through the eyes of PoA (?) era Remus having flashbacks to MWPP era.
  • Growing Teeth by earlybloomingparentheses (2.6k, Fleur/Tonks). Post-battle of Hogwarts, Fleur and Tonks get together, and both undergo a few changes. Genderqueer Tonks!
  • Don't Call Me Nymphadora by zorilleerrant (3.3k, Gen). A character study of Tonks' gender identity.

Comics and Whatnot
  • Ginny Weasley and the Chamber of Secrets by Nanse (Gen, WIP). A retelling, with absolutely gorgeous art, of CoS from Ginny's perspective. Masterful use of color and Ginny looks so small and sweet. Voldemort's corruption of her is so creepy!
  • Collide by dustmouth and Phiso (R/S). A longer comic looking at all the different universes in which Remus and Sirius find each other.
  • Forbidden Fruit by jehancourf (R/S).
  • A Day Like Any Other by dustmouth (R/S). I love the sketchiness of this art style, and the slice-of-live first war story is so poignant :')
  • A Tale of Three by Nanse (Gen). The tale of the three brothers (from Deathly Hollows) as a Western graphic novel! Super cool!
  • Static by dustmouth (R/S). Probably my favorite of dustmouth's work. The style is simple and beautiful, the narrative makes my heart ache.
